The Riverside Basketball Court

Campus always has many interesting places...places that are interesting for different reasons to different people.

The place I want to talk about is a riverside basketball court. It’s difficult for me to tell you the exact position of that court. It’s just a normal court, one of the riverside basketball courts on my campus. Actually, there is nothing special about the basketball court, the reason why I want to talk about it because it means a lot to me.

The basketball court is the place where I shot my first movie. Last semester, I took “Film Writing and Directing”. The professor was a very famous director in Taiwan, who directed the movie “Blue Gate Crossing” when I was in high school, some of you may have seen that movie. So I was really exited to take that course at that time. The professor divided our class into several groups to come up with our own story and made it into a 20 minutes long movie.

And because there was a tight basketball game in our story, we had spent more than ten weekends there until the outdoor scenes were finished. Every weekend we started at 9 and got back at about 5. It’s hard to imagine how chilly and windy it was by the riverside, especially in winter. I got sick because of staying there for so long, and when I recovered from a cold, I would get sick again for the same reason. So…actually, I hate that place, but everything was started there.

I learned everything about filmmaking on that basketball court. I learned how to write a storyboard, how to shoot, and how to direct, and we tried our best to solve every unexpected problems we faced. Teamwork was also interesting. Although I really wanted to kill some of them at that time, thinking back right now, they were precious days. That basketball court is indeed the most memorable place for me on campus.
